Menurut data UNDP 2017, Indonesia adalah negara dengan populasi masyarakat buta terbanyak ke dua di dunia setelah India. Dari jumlah total penduduk Indonesia, tercatat 1,5% menderita kebutaan dengan berbagai tingkat, dari yang masih dapat sedikit melihat, sampai yang buta total. Penduduk buta ini juga ingin beraktivitas seperti layaknya orang biasa. Namun, berbeda dengan keadaan di negara maju, di Indonesia, rendahnya penerimaan masyarakat dan kurangnya fasilitas yang mendukung, membuat mereka umumnya berada di lingkungan terbatas dan senantiasa membutuhkan bantuan orang lain. Kurangnya fasilitas, tidak seharusnya menghalangi mereka belajar life-skill agar dapat menjadi manusia mandiri. Salah satu life-skill yang perlu dikuasai adalah mengenal air agar tidak takut. Hal ini makin penting, karena Indonesia merupakan negara kepulauan yang dikelilingi air. Sejalan dengan kebutuhan pembelajaran terkait ruang dan penumbuhan empati, melalui Mata Kuliah Community Outreach, para mahasiswa Program Studi Arsitektur Universitas Ciputra menggelar program pendampingan siswa buta untuk mengenal dan tidak takut air. Program diawali dengan pembekalan bagi mahasiswa dan teman buta, praktek pendampingan, pendampingan di kolam renang dan pantai, serta evaluasi. Kegiatan sederhana ini, ternyata mampu menumbuhkan rasa percaya diri teman buta, empati para mahasiswa, dan empati masyarakat sekitar. Kegiatan pengenalan air ini penting untuk rutin diselenggarakan, karena teman buta menyukai dan membutuhkannya.
